Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Tooth Removal at Dento Smile
Your wisdom teeth typically emerge between your teenage years and late twenties. These are the third and final set of molars, situated at the back of your mouth. However, there can be insufficient space in the jaw for wisdom teeth to erupt properly. This can result in impactions, pain, swelling, or damage to adjacent teeth.
Should Your Wisdom Teeth Be Extracted?
At Dento Smile, we perform wisdom tooth removal on a case-by-case basis. While some people never need their third molars extracted, others see oral surgery as a rite of passage into adulthood. We recommend wisdom teeth extraction in the following situations

During Your Checkup
Some of the various procedures and services included in your six-month checkup visit are:
- Discomfort and swelling
- Cysts forming around the teeth
- Pressure leading to crowding
- Insufficient space
- Partial or complete eruption
- Active tooth decay or periodontal disease
Due to their position at the rear of the mouth, wisdom teeth are challenging to keep clean. This makes them susceptible to recurring infections, which, although treatable, often persist. Opting for proactive removal of your third molars is advisable to prevent potential damage to adjacent teeth.

Do You Have Gum Disease?
At Dento Smile, we evaluate the need for wisdom tooth removal on an individual basis. While some individuals may never require extraction of their third molars, others view oral surgery as a milestone in adulthood. Situations where we typically recommend wisdom tooth extraction include Progressing gum disease leads to gum tissue recession and loss of bone support. Symptoms may include tooth mobility, bad breath, elongated teeth, and sensitivity.
Due to their position at the rear of the mouth, maintaining cleanliness of wisdom teeth is challenging. They are prone to infections that, even if treated, may recur frequently. Proactively removing your third molars is recommended to prevent potential damage to adjacent teeth.
What to Expect
During your wisdom tooth evaluation, we conduct a comprehensive examination and take X-rays to assess the position and size of each tooth. If extraction is necessary, we proceed to plan your surgery.
On the day of your extraction, we administer sedatives and apply numbing medication around each tooth to be removed. An incision is made in the gums, and the molars may be removed in sections if needed. Afterward, we close the extraction site with stitches or place medication to aid healing. The entire procedure typically lasts about an hour or less.
Following the extraction, plan to take a few days off from work or school for recovery. Have soft foods like pudding, ice cream, and yogurt ready, and use cold compresses at home to reduce swelling (the most common cause of post-operative discomfort), alternating every 20 minutes. We provide written instructions and contact information for any concerns about healing
Ensuring Your Comfort
Comfort is paramount during your wisdom tooth removal appointment, as with any oral surgery. Our dentists and licensed anesthetist provide a variety of dental sedation options tailored to the procedure and your specific anxiety level. Alongside sedatives, we administer local anesthetic around each surgical site to ensure complete numbness during the extraction.
